Structural Analysis Update

Updated: Dec 9, 2022

After creating two feasible models of the canoe, the hydrostatic properties were analyzed and compared through the use of Free!Ship. Design 2 has an overall length of 19 feet and a maximum width of 30 inches whereas design 3 has a length of 17 feet with a 34.5 inch width. A speed versus resistance graph was created and compared after the hydrostatic analysis for both models were completed. It was concluded that there would be no significant hydrostatic advantage by choosing one design over the other, therefore the design selection was decided through team member preferences. The team agreed that having a longer canoe would be more preferable during the competition and that increasing the width by 4.5 inches is not that critical. The team has decided on the design 2 hull shape which will be constructed and used for competition.

Pictured is a graph displaying the two design models resistance as the speed increases. X axis is the speed in knots, Y axis is the resistance in pounds. Design 2 and 3 act very similarly, the only difference is around 5 knots where design 3 has more resistance
